Our Story at Living Machines
Living Machines was founded by Al and Daisy Deboer with the goal of advancing sustainable food production. Born and raised in Kenya, both share a lifelong passion for nature and sustainable living. With training and hands-on experience in soil food web science, aquaculture, permaculture, and in working within remote, challenging environments, they set out to design functional growing spaces that enable households and communities to achieve off-grid self-sufficiency.
The Living Machines team brings together specialists in sustainable agriculture, engineering, and design. Their combined expertise supports the delivery of smart growing systems that are both reliable and efficient. Solutions range from modular growhouses to fully integrated aquaponic systems, each tailored to meet diverse food production needs.
These systems are adaptable for different contexts: home gardeners can expand their yields, schools and lodges can establish on-site sustainable food programs, and organisations can set up large-scale growing environments. At its core, Living Machines is committed to making sustainable food production practical, scalable, and accessible for everyone.
